The Origin of The Air Spring

Shortly after the invention of the car, when comfort was still very low, inventors wanted to use this property of air to create air springs for cars. The goal is to improve the comfort of the car by absorbing shocks. Due to manufacturing technology and raw material problems, early attempts did not achieve the durability of these early air springs. In 1901, American William W. Humphreys patented his design for a dampening air cushion designed to reduce vibrations transmitted to the cabin, but the suspension still consisted of a metal spring. Frenchman Messier designed the first air springs for cars in the 1920s, and in 1929 Czechoslovakian automobile company TATRA experimented with installing air springs on the rear axle of their T24 truck. It was not until 1946, after the end of World War II, that the Stout Scarab, designed by American inventor William Bushnell, was equipped with an air spring developed and manufactured by Fire-Stone. It was the world's first car with full air suspension.
